Greenwood Soul Mates – Casey Barrentine
For us, “soul” represents that unique essence each person contributes to their community, weaving a colorful tapestry of stories, talents, cultural experiences, and more. In Greenwood, this tapestry is formed by numerous unique individuals whose captivating stories and deep connections to the region’s food, music and history define our identity as a town and make Greenwood such an extraordinary place to visit. These remarkable individuals are our “Soul Mates.”
In Greenwood, some roots run deep.
For Casey Barrentine, every chapter of life traces back to this Mississippi Delta town. She grew up here and built both a career and calling within the same community that shaped her. Ask Casey to describe Greenwood and her answer come quickly: cozy. Not small. Not sleepy. Cozy in the way that means connected. People greet one another by name. Neighbors feel like family. The town carries a sense of belonging.
“It’s a family atmosphere,” Casey says. “Even if you’re not blood-related we still consider each other family.”
She does not simply observe that closeness. She lives it.
A Life Woven into the Delta

Casey’s family ties stretch across Greenwood and the surrounding area. Over the years, she has watched generations grow up together. Teachers guide students whose parents once sat in the same classrooms. Friendships last decades. When someone needs help the community responds. Life here moves with purpose and relationships matter.
Casey’s career reflects the Delta’s agricultural foundation. She works in the cotton industry with Staplcotn while members of her extended family work across the same system from farming to ginning. Their work follows cotton’s path from field to finished product.
“It’s just another example of how we’re all so connected here,” she says.
Cotton supports her career but ministry shapes her purpose.
A Heart for Second Chances

Outside of her full-time job Casey leads a nonprofit ministry that helps people struggling with addiction find treatment and begin again. Many she helps have faced incarceration or carry the weight of difficult seasons. Her work did not begin with a business plan. It began with one moment she could not ignore.
An encounter with a young boy battling addiction changed her direction. Concern turned into action. With support from her family and what she describes as a clear divine calling, Casey stepped forward to help people ready for recovery but unsure where to start.
From that moment the mission grew. Today she connects individuals with treatment, helps secure sponsors and guides people as they rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
“Our goal is to help them become successful citizens,” Casey explains. “Just because you’ve made mistakes doesn’t mean it’s over.”
The work rarely fits inside a schedule. Lunch breaks often turn into coordination calls. Evenings bring follow-ups, check-ins and problem-solving with people who have few places to turn.
“There really isn’t a balance,” she says with a soft laugh. “I work from seven to four and then at four, it’s ministry time.”
Still Casey shifts credit away from herself.
“It’s not me. It’s Christ,” she says. “Grace gives us second chances every day. We just have to accept them.”
When the Community Shows Up
Casey has learned one thing with certainty. In Greenwood, needs rarely sit unanswered. Her nonprofit runs entirely on donations, and time after time, local supporters step forward. When someone needs treatment or a family needs help response comes quickly.
“Our community wholeheartedly sponsors what we do,” she says. “When there’s a need, it happens. People show up.”
During the holidays, her organization provides gifts and support for dozens of children. Other local groups consistently rally alongside them so families don’t fall through the cracks. It’s this collective generosity that Casey believes defines the city she loves.
“You don’t even worry about it,” she says. “You know the people will take care of it.”
The Greenwood Experience
For visitors, Casey believes Greenwood offers something rare. The town invites you to slow down. Downtown welcomes an easy walk. Local boutiques sit just steps from restaurants and spas. A long weekend can include incredible meals, meaningful conversations and time to truly relax, not rush. And while the amenities matter, Casey circles back to what visitors notice first.
“The people,” she says simply.
A door held open. The friendly conversation in line at the store. Strangers who become familiar faces before the day ends. That same spirit fuels tourism and supports the local economy. When visitors come for Viking Cooking School classes, blues history, or weekend getaways, they don’t just spend money, they carry Greenwood’s story home with them.
And that word of mouth is powerful.
The Soul of Greenwood
When asked what the word soul means to her, Casey doesn’t hesitate.
“It’s a giving heart,” she says. “Whether it’s the individual on the street or the person in charge, everyone here has such a loving, giving spirit.”
That description fits for a town built on connection. When the conversation comes full circle on what truly makes up the heart and soul of Greenwood, her answer is the same one echoed by so many before her.
The people.
In her humble leadership, her steady faith and her daily commitment to lifting others up, Casey Barrentine reflects that spirit beautifully, one act of care at a time.
