By the mid-1960s, the Greenwood Police Department formed an auxiliary to control protests. Journalists captured clashes between authorities and aspiring voters, blocked by poll taxes and literacy tests. In 1963, Bob Dylan performed "Only a Pawn in Their Game" for SNCC volunteers, honoring Medgar Evers.
