Unita Blackwell

In Mayersville, a historical marker honors Unita Blackwell, the town's first Black mayor and a civil rights pioneer. As an activist with the SNCC and representative at the 1964 Democratic National Convention, she made significant contributions to the fight for equality. Blackwell advised six U.S. presidents and received the MacArthur Fellowship in 1993. The marker is located across from the Issaquena County Courthouse.
