Historic Keesler Bridge – June 5
Join a celebration that brings history to life and showcases one of Greenwood’s most renowned structures – the Keesler Bridge. On Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 4:30 p.m., locals and visitors alike are invited to gather downtown for the 100th anniversary of the iconic bridge for a free event that will blend storytelling, community pride, and scenic charm along the Yazoo River. Whether you’re a history buff or are simply looking for a meaningful reason to explore Greenwood, this milestone event guarantees an unforgettable experience From the Heart of the Delta.
Once a modern marvel, the Keesler Bridge remains one of Greenwood’s most historic landmarks. Built in 1925, the swing-style Howe Truss bridge was designed to rotate horizontally to allow boats to pass along the Yazoo River. For generations, it has served as a vital link between the south side of Fulton Street and Grand Boulevard to the north, guiding residents into the heart of downtown.
Officially named for General S.R. Keesler, whose leadership drove the construction and completion of the bridge, it was christened by Elizabeth Leflore Ray with spring water from the historic Malmaison estate, home of Choctaw Chief Greenwood Leflore. The vintage bridge carries more than just cars; it carries stories rich in history and local memories. Recognized as a Mississippi Landmark in 1987 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Keesler Bridge has survived time and the threat of demolition in the late 1990s thanks to an outcry of community passion. This public uproar, led by State Representative May Whittington, then Director of Main Street Greenwood, not only saved the bridge but also led to its restoration in 2000.
Thursday will give the community a chance to celebrate a century of history, resilience and pride. The program will feature remarks by Mayor Carolyn McAdams, Greenwood historian Dr. Mary Carol Miller and Lolly Rash, Executive Director of the Mississippi Heritage Trust.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, this event is your chance to experience a meaningful chapter of Greenwood’s story and celebrate the people, places, and history that make it so special.
