Wayne and Minnie Cox Park

A marker and park stand in tribute to Wayne and Minnie Cox, who made history at this site in the late 1800s. In 1888, Wayne Cox became the first African American elected as alderman in Indianola, a groundbreaking achievement for the time. His wife, Minnie, was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as the nation's first known African American female postmaster. This historical marker is located at the corner of Faisonia Avenue and Gresham Street West, commemorating their remarkable contributions to their community and the nation.
